When David took his new job for the church in salt lake in April we had planned to to just stay where we were in South Jordan but his commute was around 45 minutes to an hour taking to the train. He was having to leave really early in the morning and getting home really late. So we decided to start looking for a place downtown
Our two main goals were to
1. Save Money
2. Be close to Dave aka no commute
We looked for a month and the best we could find in our price range was an older apartment with no dishwasher, washer and dryer, A/C, microwave, or elevator. It was obviously going to be a HUGE change but something that we were willing to do for a short amount of time. The great thing about this place was the location, only a 5 min walk to Davids work, temple square, city creek, and all of that.
When we did the walk through 3 weeks before we were suppose to move in the place was really dirty and nothing was ready to go. They had pulled out the drywall to expose the brick but did nothing to clean the brick up afterwards, big chunks of rock were falling from the wall and when we pointed this out they promised to clean off the wall and fix a bunch of other things
Fast forward 3 weeks to Friday July 18th the day before we are suppose to move in. We go and get the keys and do the walk through and guess what? The apartment looks the exact same. The exact same piece of rock I had pulled from the wall was still laying in the exact same spot. We fought with them for a long time to clean the brick like they said they would but in the end they refused. Here is a list of things that was wrong before we moved in.
-Brick wall not clean like promised
-Nails sticking out of the brick wall
-The screens didn't fit the windows properly
-No Shower rod to fit our older shower which required a 90 degree angle, they wanted us to go buy one, where i said! they were so rude about it. Eventually put one in.
-No rods in the closets
-It was filthy
They had someone come and "mop the floors" and they put in rods in the closet and fixed the nails but that was it. I spent all day Sunday hand mopping the floors they were disgusting she basically mopped it with water and a dirty mop.
*A HUGE thank you to Davids mom and dad for coming and helping us move the first time, I don't know how we would have done it without them they were a huge help. Thank you a thousand times over!
Sunday:
I spent all day hand mopping the dirty floors they were so bad. The person who "cleaned" on Friday basically used a dirty mop and water to move the existing dirt on the floor around a bit.
We also discover that the toilet seat was broken and there was no hot water.
Monday:
I go to cook dinner and the stove won't turn on. We had a brand new stove so I assumed they just forgot to turn on the gas.Everything up to this point was fixable and liveable! Things I could laugh about and brush off my shoulder, however I could tell David was starting loose his patience with this place.
Tuesday:
Someone comes to fix the toilet seat and the stove. He lets me in on how crappy the management is and how they shouldn't have left the walls they way they were and also that they building had caught on fire just a few months before we moved in!
He fixes the seat and turns on the gas so now everything is working like it should. This is around 12.
We go to meet David for lunch after and then we come home for a nap at 2. Rivers as we all know is a bad napper and usually only sleeps for 30 mins, however this day he sleeps for 2 1/2 hours. Of course this is just so wonderful to me and I don't dare go in to check on him in case I wake him up.
When he does wake up at 5 and I go in to get him his room smells like some weird chemical, not gas but kind of like gas. We call maintenance and they can't figure out what it is and turn off the gas just in case it is the stove, we go check into a hotel and basically that night decide we can't do this anymore it's just not safe.
Wednesday:
David goes to the apartment to talk to management about getting out of our lease and being reibursed for the hotel. They agree to both and we head to South Jordan to look at some brand new townhomes that were built a few months ago. After a quick tour we decide is the best option. We sat around all day at a friends house waiting for the new management to approve us, it was long and awful and we were all done by the time we finally got the keys but there was still so much to do.
This is the best part we drive all the way to Salt Lake to get some things for the night and realize we left the keys to the Salt Lake apartment back in South Jordan. We drive all the way back to SJ put rivers to bed find someone to watch him for us and then we head to SL to get the air mattress
Second best part we get all the way back to SJ and realize we don't have the plug for the air matress (It won't stay full) Dave drives all the way back to SL to get our camping pads with no luck in finding the air mattress plug.
Thursday:
Davids sister and her family are kind enough to help us move our mattress and a few other things to get us by until Friday when the movers come. This day was pioneer day a holiday so it was really really kind of Brittany and Eric to do that for us.
Friday: Movers come to help us in SL and we have 3 hours to get everything out and back in SJ and the truck back to the Uhaul before being charged more money. By some miracle we get it done!
WOOOO!!
It was such a pain in the butt and for the next two weeks I swear my body was detoxing from all the stress of it all, I would just sit and stare and watched a lot of TV and drank a lot of Diet Coke. You know when something is so stressful your body just goes into fight mode to get it done but then when it's over it's been holding it all in and the littlest thing will set it off into blubbering tear mode. Ya Poor Dave got a few of those set off on him.
We are so so happy in our new place! and like David said at lunch after signing the lease to our new place "My Name is David Palmer and I admit to loving the suburbs." Hear Hear!!
